Renaissance Now?
When was then renaissance for the Asian culture? What is a renaissance is what needs to be known first, a renaissance is: a movement or period of vigorous artistic and intellectual activity. The best example would be to look at Europe’s past when we hear about the history of Scientific Revolution during the Enlightenment. We come to recognize that the origins of Scientific Revolution first started in Europe during the Renaissance.
The Renaissance happened in Europe during the span of the 14th-17th centuries. The main difference to consider is that Western Europe at the time had constant wars, invasions, the Black Plague, they had little government and religious stability in the Dark Ages. The lacking government and religious support allowed new ideas to flourish. Most of the world was still suffering warfare.
Many parts of Asia did not have access to innovative ideas because of the policies of isolationism. China and Japan were the big players in Asia and still are. In the 13th century Japan and Western Europe prevented invasion by the Mongol Empire, but China was dominated by them until the launch of the Ming Dynasty influenced by Confucianism. The Ming Dynasty in China begun a long period of isolationism in the 14th century, which hindered its capacity to embrace outside ideas in cultural and progress. The stress of warfare with the Mongols caused the government of Japan to become deeply indebted and it was overthrown, starting a period of internal strife. With China and Japan taking a break to recover it left Europe to keep advancing.
Due to the failure of the Kamakura government, Japan was an Age of Civil Wars. Feudal lords clashed to control the Kyoto court. The instability of the country probably contributed to the failure to have a Renaissance. Japan then entered a period of isolationism in the 17th century.
