Speech #2

Informative Speech

Length 5-5:30 Min

Assignment Value: 60 Points (Outline worth 10 points)

Purpose:

Using personal experiences and research in the forms of supporting materials, clarify or explain an idea from one of the following areas:

  1. To explain a political, economic or social issue
  2. To explain a historical event, force or movement
  3. To explain a theory, principle, or concept
  4. To describe an activity

Demonstration, or “how to” speeches should be avoided.  Your purpose is to inform, not to persuade.

Requirements:

Choose a topic that is of interest to you and that you think will be of interest to your audience.  Be sure that your topic is as narrow as possible.  For example, the topic “exercise” is too broad.  However, the topic, “the benefits of weightlifting” is more appropriate.

Speaking within the time limit indicates a speech has been well-rehearsed and prepared.  You will be penalized two points for going over or under the time limit.  You will be evaluated on the following 10 criteria:  the ability to attract and hold attention, poise and self esteem, nervousness (or the absence of) or other distracting factors; use of clear, direct language, voice quality and projection; eye contact, appropriate gestures, appropriate platform movement; audience analysis and overall content.  Each carries a maximum of five points for a total of 50.

You are required to submit a typed, complete sentence outline.  It should be properly formatted to include proper numbering sequence, all parts of the speech labeled (introduction, body, conclusion, transitions, works cited).  Make a copy of your outline for your use.  This part of your speech is worth 10 points.  Handwritten outlines will not be accepted and you will not receive any credit if one is submitted.  Finally, you must cite at least five sources (only one Internet source permitted.) and use at a minimum one visual aid.  Note:  If you do not use a visual aid you will lose two points.  If you use more than one Internet source you will lose one point for each Internet source.
