Knowing my audience shaped my writing in terms of content, structure, and tone. Keeping my audience in mind while writing my narrative essay helped me with choosing my words, including the information that is needed to envoy my message, organizing my ideas, and using the proper tone that fits my audience.
For instance, I started the assignment by writing my story of how I selected Excelsior College with concise information about how my passion for nuclear medicine was aroused, and used simple words such as progress and learn which my audience (students or future students) should be familiar with. Then I extracted the thesis from the story after reading over it and highlighting the main idea in each passage. Finally, I wrote the conclusion with intent to briefly cover the thesis and the story’s main points.
My struggle with writing was the amount of explanation that should be included in the essay, but reading my draft as a reader that has no previous knowledge of the material helped me to decide how much explanation to include in the essay. I took advantage of my peer review’s constructive feedback and the professor’s comments to fill the gap between the thesis and the conclusion, rearrange the paragraphs, and to correct the grammar errors. I asked my friends for feedback after reading my piece to redraft and edit. I’m content with my essay, and I believe the time was enough to do all the revisions and edits I needed.
