The general characteristics of Baroque are the pathos and stressed sentimentliy, fullness and wavy motion of all shapes, splendour and picturesqueness, representation and the connectedness of seperate kinds and the way of life into so called collective art (Gesamtkunstwerk), as it is in a most perfect way represented by the baroque theatre, the baroque catholic liturgy and the baroque mansion with gardens. The cradle of Baroque is Italy, other most powerful centre points are also Spain, France, Holland, south Germany, Austria and Bohemia. Baroque was equaly expressed on the church and secular field of fine art.

The Italian influences were prevailing in the art od the 17. and 18. century. The initiatives came either directly from Italy ( Venice, Bologna, Rome) or from other centers (Graz, Wien). The process of had been developing from the middle of the 17. century onwards. There were two important artistic centres for the swing of our Baroque: Graz as the main city of Styria and Ljubljana as the centre of Carniola. After the foundation of the Academie operosorum in 1693 which deliberately encouraged leaning of our art against the Italian art, Ljubljana, became the focal point of the Slovenian Baroque and also had influence on Carinthia, Styria and Croatia. Seperately, the art in Primorska was developing, which throughout the time belonged in the Venecian cultural circle ( Venice). We classify our Baroque chronologically into 3 periods: from the middle till the end of the 17. century the Early Baroque, this is the time of the appropriation of the baroque characteristics and powerful share of foreign artists; from the beginning till 1770’s the Mature Baroque, when the Italian, Viennesse ideals were made valued; in the last decades of the 18. century the Late Baroque
