Basic file restore using CommVault
Introduction
This document is a step by step procedure on how to restore a file using CommVault. Note: It is essential that the ITG account teams give you the file and location details before a file is restored and wether it is to be restored to it’s original location or an alternate location.
Restore process for recent data
1. From the Commserve, (see the below index for available Commserves and the regions they are present in) open the Commcell Console using the Commcell Console icon either located on the Desktop or in the Programs List in the Start Menu under Start > All Programs > Commvault > Simpana > Commcell Console.

2. Log into the console using your appropriate Active Directory user name and password making sure that the server name is listed in the CommCell in respective to your region. (ignore the login details in the example below)
3. In the main console window locate the Browse Button (circled in red below)
4. Once the “Browse Options” window appears, keep the default selection of “Browse the Latest Data. Also, select the client that you wish to view available data that can be restored. To show all the data that was protected from the latest backup to the last Full backup, deselect the “Image Browsing” check box and click OK.
5. The selections window will now appear beside the Commcell Browser window. Select the File, Files or Folders that you wish to restore by expanding the Client > Agent and finally the BackupSet. If the “Index Restore” window appears go to step 8.
6. You should now be able to select the appropriate files. Once all Files or Folders have been selected click the “Recover All Selected” button to view the “Recovery Options” dialog.
7. In the “Restore Options” window, select the server to restore data to and deselect the “Restore to Same Paths” check box to change the default location of the restore data (The default location is the original location the data was protected). Click the Advanced button if you wish to restore to a server located in a different Data Centre. If not click OK to start the restore operation.
8. The restore operation should now be running in the job controller window
Restore process for old data
Follow the above process from points 1 to 3.
1. Once the “Browse Options” window appears, change the selection to “Specify Browse Time”. Change the Date and Time that you wish to “Browse Data Before”. Attempt to pick a date and time after the finishing time of the particular day’s data protection operations. So for example if I wished to restore data from Tuesday nights backup, I would set the Date and Time to the following Wednesday morning.
Also, select the client that you wish to view available data that can be restored and click OK.
2. Select the client that you wish to view available data that can be restored. To show all the data that was protected from the latest backup to the last Full backup, deselect the “Image Browsing” check box and click OK.
3. The selections window will now appear beside the Commcell Browser window. Select the File, Files or Folders that you wish to restore by expanding the Client > Agent and finally the BackupSet. If the “Index Restore” window appears go to step 8.
4. If the “Index Restore” window appears click the YES button. This will restore the required Indexes to the Media Agent that you are restoring through. This operation should take approximately 1 to 2 minutes and may, in some cases run a couple of times in the Job Controller.
5. You should now be able to select the appropriate files. Once all Files or Folders have been selected click the “Recover All Selected” button to view the “Recovery Options” dialog.
