I. Opening Paragraph

a. The community taught Sethe the alphabet and even how to stitch. Page 95 "had claimed herself". The community becomes envious of Baby Suggs and fails warn the household of 124 about schoolteacher. As a result, the baby, Beloved, was killed and returns to embody the past.

b. The Cincinnati community helps individuals develop their sense of self, and the community works together to drive the ghost, Beloved, away, securing Sethe and their own release from the past.

II. First Support Area of Analysis

a. When the community turns away from one of their members, it results in bad things to occur like the death of a crawling already baby.

b. "it would be a cause for celebration" page 135

"Ninety people who ate so well, and laughed so much, it made them angry" page 136

c. The community broke apart seeing 124 as being too proud. Consequently, because of the rejection upon them, they fail to warn 124 of schoolteacher's coming. As a result, Sethe kills her babies in an act of desperation and love.

III. Second Support Area of Analysis

a. The Cincinnati community helps Sethe and later Denver to discover and claim themselves.

b. "In the Clearing, along with herself, she had claimed herself" page 95

"were, young and happy, playing in Baby Suggs' yard, not feeling the envy that surfaced the next day" page 258

c. The Cincinnati community helps Sethe develop a sense of self and helps her to learn to love her own children and claim herself. The Clearing was the place that everyone was the same. They laughed, danced, and sang together with no one leading. The community also misjudges Sethe when it is they themselves that is reflected in the face of Sethe. For example, Ella. Later on, the community assists Denver in her way to independence.
