Homework #2

  1. Is Beowulf a Hero?

  • Out of the four terms we've come up with in class, this one fit Beowulf the most. A hero is someone who does good for others, and is ideal. Beowulf definitely fits this description. In the story, no one asked Beowulf to kill the monster Grendel. He hears about the monster and voluntarily offers to fight it. He is the ideal character in the story, and in the end, he saves the day by killing Grendel and saving peoples lives, and dying for what he was fighting for.
  1. Is Beowulf courageous?
  • According to our definition, courage is not being afraid, or facing your fears. Beowulf definitely fits this description as well. Through out the beginning of the story, Beowulf is practically begging the king to allow him to slay the monster. He does all this voluntarily, which shows he is not afraid, and if he was afraid, it would show him facing his fears.
  1. Is Beowulf a leader?
  • A leader should display a lot of strong qualities, such as courage, intelligence, authority, and experience. Beowulf possesses everyone of these qualities. He is full of courage when he voluntarily offers to fight Grendel. He shows authority when he leads his men into the kings place. Most of all I think is experience. Beowulf says he has slain many monsters in the past.

  1. Is Beowulf loyal?
  • According to our definition, loyal means to be trustworthy, helpful, and reliable. It also means to stick by someones side and not take advantage of them. In the story, Beowulf is definitely loyal. The king and all the citizens and men are relying on Beowulf to kill this monster thats terrorizing their city. Beowulf carries out this role by not giving up and not asking to much, or anything at all in return. He is very helpful to the people and they trust he will get the job done.
