Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also called Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neuromuscular disease that weakens and eventually destroys motor neurons. (http://www.neurologyc) It was Ironic that Lou Gehrig would get such a disease, once known as the "Iron Horse" for his two thousand, one hundred, and thirty consecutive games played. (http://www.als.ca/lou_) Lou Eventually died from the disease but his name would stay with it forever making Lou Gehrig Synonymous with ALS for year and years to come.

Lou Gehrig was born on June 19th 1903 in New York City. Lou had a wife Eleanor Twitchel who he cared about very much. Lou Gehrig had a deep passion for his wife. Growing up Lou played football, baseball, gymnastics, soccer, ice skating, swimming, billiards and marbles. Lou went to Columbia University and attended there on a football scholarship not baseball. Lou Gehrig played for the New York Yankees and his position was First Base, Outfield and Shortstop for one at bat in 1934. Lou Gehrig was most famous for his two thousand one hundred and thirty consecutive games played. This mean he played almost 14 consecutive seasons with out miss one game. That is phenomenal. In fact it was the Major League Baseball's record for consecutive games played for the longest time until Cal Ripken Junior broke it just a few years ago. If you look at Gehrig's career number you can see that his stats are staggering. His career batting average is .340. Out of his total games played which was two thousand one hundred and sixty four he had one thousand, nine hundred and ninety five Runs Batted In. (www.lougehrig.com) It was too bad that Lou Gehrigs career was cut short bye a terrible disease known as ALS.

Lour Gehrigs was unfortunately diagnosed with ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's disease," is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually lead to their death. (http://www.alsa.org/a) Meaning it slowly wears away and your muscle and stop all muscle movements in your body. You know you have ALS is you experience muscle weakness and stiffness as the initial symptom. Usually the first muscles affected are those in the arms and legs. Walking or climbing stairs may be difficult. The patient may drop things, fall, experience muscle cramps, and laugh or cry uncontrollably. (http://www.neurologyc) Most people get ALS if it runs in your family. Scientist do not have a cure for it and they don't have a way of telling how u can possible get it. Over the past years people have been living longer with ALS with specialized drugs and clinics.

Lou Gehrig known was the Iron Horse was diagnosed with ALS. I think this was kind of Ironic as this big tough strong man getting diagnosed with a disease that would eventually were away at your muscles. (Luckiest Man: Life and Death of Lou Gehrig, 141) Lou Gehrigs or anyone's experience with ALS is very awful. In 1938, Lou Gehrig fell below .300 for the first time since 1925 and it was clear that there was something wrong. He lacked his usual strength. Pitches
