Black Panther Records and Productions are seeking sponsors for "The Legacy Tour," a multimedia event featuring speakers, hip-hop and rap performances, video, and photography. The first event is to be staged at Oakland's Merritt College, in the Huey Newton and Bobby Seale Student Lounge, in conjunction with a celebration of Huey Newton's birthday, and during Black History Month. The eventual goal is to take the production to fifty other universities within the course of one year.
"The Legacy Tour" will bring together important Black Panther Party members, local activists, and musicians affiliated with Black Panther Records and Productions. The events will also showcase a short film and a photography exhibit that will briefly outline the history of the Party, and the programs that they instituted in their communities. CDs of the evenings featured artists and other acts would be for sale, as well as clothing with images and slogans of the Black Panther Party.
There is significant interest in the Black Panther Party, and the name recognition of this group will serve to draw in people to the event. Panther sponsored events and activities, such as the locally offered Legacy Tour, the panther inspired clothing line, and films about the group have proven very popular with youth and college students. This in combination with an evening of live performers such as The Black Panther Fugitives, T.I., and artist Solo Style hitting the stage with their brand of live beats and politically conscious lyrics, will create an evening of entertainment, education, and empowerment that will bring out students, activists, and hip hop fans.
The Black Panther Party already has a proven draw among college and university students. The Legacy Tours, created and operated by David Hilliard in Oakland, pull in thousands of visitors from all over the world. To date, the Legacy Tour has hosted visitors from Japan, Italy, Germany, England, France, China, Sweden, Mexico, Brazil, and many other countries. The tour has been published in sources as diverse as music magazines like The Source, XXL, and Vibe, to Pathfinders Travel Magazine, and Japan's weekly publication AsahiGraph. Additionally, the Legacy Tours and the legacy of the Black Panther Party have been discussed in the New York Times, LA Times, and the Washington Post. Groups
