A fetish can be described as something, such as a material object, a non-sexual part of the body or a situation that arouses sexual desire and may eventually become necessary for sexual gratification. There are an uncountable number of fetishes that are just as diverse as the people who harbor them. They range from the simple to the complex; from high heels to leather; from the act of urinating on someone's body to wearing diapers. According The Fetish Club Online, the largest fetish in North America today is bondage. The complete definition of bondage, an explanation of why some people and not others choose this fetish, the safety procedures that must be executed when choosing bondage, its expansion on both the web and in our society today as well as a discussion of its social taboo will follow.

Bondage, as defined by the Wikipedia Enclycopedia Online, is a sexual practice that involves people being tied up or restrained for pleasure. It can be subdivided into six categories: Bondage that pulls parts of the body together (ropes, harnesses, straps), that pulls parts of the body apart (spreader bars, x-frames), that ties the body down to another object (chair, socks), that suspends the body from another object (suspension devices), that restricts normal movement (handcuffs, hobble skirts, pony harness) and that wraps the whole body or part of the body in bindings like cloth or plastic (saran wrap or "cling" film). There are a large variety of "everyday" restraints used in bondage like rope, handcuffs, straightjackets and belts inclusively. There are also purposely made bondage restraints like monogloves, sleepsacks and bondage hooks. A monoglove is typically a single sleeved leather glove that binds both arms of the submissive person behind their back and is secured in place either by a string system or a zipper. A sleepsack, similar to a sleeping bag, confines the person to a form fitting leather bag that zips up until their neck and can be comfortable for extended periods of time. Bondage hooks are blunt-headed hooks used for the purpose of bondage and can be divided into three categories: nose hooks, tail hooks and "pussy" hooks. Each involve inserting one end of the hook into the designated crevice and attaching the other end to a rope in order to extend the desired body cavity for pleasure. Many different techniques can be used in bondage. Some are simple while others can be more complex. A simple example would involve the dominant person telling the submissive person what to do or beginning by tying one player's hands in front of or behind their back. A more complex example might entail a spread eagle in which one person's legs are spread apart and attached to bedposts by means of rope or cuffs. Many fantasy situations are also used in addition to bondage like rape, domination/slavery or torture.

According to the Wikipedia Enclyclopedia Online, those who choose to incorporate bondage into their sexual habits do so for many different individual reasons. There are two positions that can be fulfilled when performing bondage: you can either be the one being tied up or the one doing to tying up. Those who prefer to be tied up often like to tactile feeling of restraint (being pulled or pushed), enjoy the feeling of helplessness or take pleasure in being able to do something dangerous in a safe way. Conversely, those who prefer to be the one tying the other up tend to take pleasure in seeing their partner act submissively, enjoy the feeling of trust their partner has given them or wish to take control of sexually pleasing their partner with complete control. Given the diversity of people involved in this fetish, there are no doubt other reasons, but these represent a few examples.

According to Bedroom Bondage Online, there are some safety concerns when practicing bondage that involve both the physical and emotional well being of both partners involved. If practicing bondage with a partner whom you're in a long-term relationship with, then trust is probably not an issue. However, since some people practice with strangers like people met off of the Internet, it has given rise to the "Safe, Sane and Consensual credo". Safe means that attempts are made to identify and prevent risks to health and body. Sane means that actions are carried out
