A new paradigm in criminal justice
Brain fingerprinting is a technique that measures recognition of familiar stimuli by measuring electrical brain wave responses to words, phrases, or pictures that are presented on a computer screen.
Ð'* American neurologist Dr Lawrence A Farwell. An expert in brain wave science, was the inventor of this invaluable technique.
Ð'* He called his technique 'brain-wave fingerprinting' or 'brain mapping test.'
Ð'* MERMER(Memory and Encoding Related Multifaceted Electroencephalographic Response) is a brain response derived from the EEG data at different sites
Ð'* Main componentÐ" P300 wave which is is emitted from an individual's brain approximately 300 milliseconds after it is confronted with a stimulus that has special significance to that individual
Ð'* There are no verbal stimuli as it is based on EEG signals.
Technique
Ð'* The accused is first interrogated after which sensors are attached to his/her head
Ð'* The subject is shown certain images or made to hear certain sounds.
Ð'* The sensors monitor electrical activity in the brain and register P300 waves, which are generated only if the subject has connection with the stimulus -- picture or sound.
It is a relatively new technique however, one that is emerging to be one of the finest ways of detecting criminals.
