I. Historical phases
Empire:1825-1889
Old Republic:1889-1930
Acceleration of coffee and wheat exports
Shift of political power to south
Southern Brazil is the economic heart of Brazil. The shift of power to the coffee oligarchy based in the south continues to diminish the power of the crown.
During the period of the old republic the essential power was negotiated between three states. However power was still very decentralized and there was much regional authority but compared to the empire phase it was more centralized.
II. Getulio Vargas and Estado Novo (1930-1945:supported by military, industrialists, middle class
Lasting effects-
1. start of ISI (1930-1980'S) In 1937 he order a new political order (en) with the support of the groups mentioned above. Particularly during this period, he creates a system that has lasting effect on policies.

3. beginning of populism (1944) Urban population begins to grow and populists appeal to the poor urban population begins to increase. Vargas really begins to appeal to the urban mass after an opposition forms against Vargas. The end of WWII brought about anti-authoratic feeling and vargas was pushed out by military officers.
III. Limited Democracy: 1946-1964
Formation of patronage parties: PSD and PTB: populist appeals
Psd was comprised of old political bosses of the northeast and the ptb tended to appeal to the left. Some coalition governed brazil for most of this period. There was an opposition party
