Balancing The Budget?
Should the government become responsible for maintaining a balanced budget? I believe that we as a country have to be more realistic about the costs of government programs that Americans want. Not everyone can get what they what, and in all reality we do need to come up with new solid plans on balancing the budget.
There is no better government investment than in the well-being of the American people. The most cost-effective programs are preventive programs. America has the means to help its own people, since it is one of the world's wealthiest nations, with one of the lowest tax burdens. Maintaining the budget will be a very difficult process, but if we were to use these steps I do believe in our government to take the bull by it's horns and slowly lower the deficit. My suggestions are to shift public spending to preventive programs, which are less costly than dealing with social problems as they emerge. Invest heavily in education and job training programs, to spur economic growth. Guarantee aid to the poor and the elderly. Pay for government programs by raising taxes on the wealthy, and reducing military spending.
We cannot take back our promises to the elderly and others who need our help. Preventive social programs are the most cost-effective way to ensure all the upcoming generations that one day the government will be able to take care of them when they become senior citizens. As far as having a set limit on how much money we spend and borrow, I do not believe that is the right thing to do. You never know when the money will be needed and every year will be different from the past. We are growing as a country and I do not ever see that changing.
