Describe how the components of the Hawthorne study are incorporated in current human resource functions. What was the main idea behind this study? How have you been impacted by the components of this study in your current or past work setting? Respond to at least two of your peers posts.
The purpose of the Hawthorne studies was to observe and note the impact of varying physical factors on the productivity of workers (Baack, 2017). Some of the studies components were environmental such as lighting, while others were the level of interaction from management with the workers. “Individual attitudes and collective employee morale were significant determinants of productivity levels.” (Baack, 2017, Section 1.2, “Historical Overview: Scientific Management and Human Relations”, para. 9) This study has been key to understanding the importance of fosters a positive relationship between managers and employees. This study began the focus on human relations in management within industry that ultimately led to the development of human resource departments as we know them today. I know personally through my own HR manager the importance of fostering strong relationships in management with the plant floor operations personnel. This personal touch which displays consideration, interest, and a general empathy with workers’ assist corporations with improved morale that ultimately yields higher levels of productivity. I am sure many have heard the term “money talks” speaking of the power of money and in business often the willingness of individuals to conduct certain job functions as long as the pay is deemed sufficient to make it worth the employee’s time. Whenever I have search for new positions, the salary of the job is a critical component in my evaluation of the role, but has never been the primary requirement.
