Drake, call me on my shell phone.

The idea of Order is represented by the poem. Structurally there is nothing chaotic about the poem as it follows the structure of a typical Italian sonnet. The poem is about poetry itself and is displayed in how there are few elements that actually illustrate chaos in the poem. The rhyme scheme of the poem follows ABBAABBA CDCDCD of a classical Italian sonnet, but it is ironic that Edna would use this orderly meter to write about Chaos itself, which is disorderly. In terms of rhyming pattern and the meter, this poem is in predominantly iambic pentameter, but uses a few strong words to describe Chao’s struggle to escape order such as “twist” and “ape”. The structure of the poem directly contradicts the meaning. The author is trapping Chaos within the sonnet, but gives the Chaos freedom to escape and become good at the end in saying, “I shall not even force him to confess; or answer. I will only make him good.”

The goal of the poem is stated in the first line declaring that Millay will trap Chaos and shape it into fourteen lines. Although Chaos gives a great struggle, it is defeated by its own “adroit designs” and “arrogance.” Millay believes that caging the Chaos in the poem will not indefinitely keep it there in saying she will, “keep him there; and let him thence escape,” to relieve the Chaos. The author knows that it is a matter of time to make him good on his own and therefore does not completely force the Chaos itself into a structure. The author characterizes the Chaos as a reference towards men to imply how troublesome and inevitable they are. As in society, men can only be changed if they are to be set free.
