Campaign Songs

The following essay will propose a campaign song for the current California State Treasurer and a democratic candidate for California State governor, Phil Angelides. In campaigning it is very important that you have a strong theme song. A catchy theme song can capture the attention of voters and attract more attention toward a candidates' campaign. Songs may introduce new demographics of voters, such as the younger generation . It is important not to select anything that may offend a certain demographic, so it does become tricky in choosing the right song. For instance, by selecting a song that is new age or hip-hop, you may turn off many older and more conservative voters, while choosing an old classic country song may result in the loss of interest in younger voters. I have chosen a song that appeals to old and new voters, "One Vision" by the legendary rock group Queen. I felt this song was fit because of the lyrics it has provided and it helps send the message of the vision and stance Phil Angelides has taken. In this essay I will discuss the issues in which Mr. Angelides is associated with as well as his strengths as a candidate. I will further discuss why I believe "One Vision" is a great campaign song as well as some messages that it may send. I will conclude with where I believe this song would play a great role.

On a summer day in 1953 ,in the state capital of Sacramento, a future leader was born into a nice greek family, his name Phil Angelides. Phil, a Harvard graduate, grew up to serve the state he grew up in. Phil has served his home state for over thirty years. (Angelides.com) From 1975 to 1983, Phil Angelides served the state of California finding ways for affordable housing. In 1991, he became Chair of the Democratic Party where he helped democrats take seat in the Senate. In 1998, Phil Angelides became California State Treasurer, where he made investments in energy and environmental technologies, California communities, etc. As Treasurer Angelides helped create more job opportunities for Californians. ( Angelides.com) Phil Angelides is a great candidate for governor because of his background and political involvement in California. The fact that he has much support from famous democrats, such as Senator John Kerry, helps his campaign become more legitimate. His stance on education will help him succeed against opponents such as Arnold, who has lost the support of educators throughout the state.

In my opinion, Phil Angelides seems a little powerless when watching him on TV. By choosing a theme song with a little bit of an edge and a whole lot of power, maybe his image will sharpen a bit. I would like this song to illustrate power, determination, and loyalty. I hope this song promotes teamwork, and portrays a message that Phil Angelides believes with his one vision, together the state of California shall prevail. I believe the song is not too political and may even lighten up the campaign. The song was not made for a political purposes, yet it fits and sends a powerful message, with phrases like, "One man, one goal, one mission, one heart, one soul, just one solutionÐ'...One vision." (Queen, One Vision) This is a powerful slogan, signifying there is one man for the job, this message is clear and straight forward. When the song says: "I had a dream,
