This paper focuses on the interpersonal, group management and non-
technical aspects of leadership effectiveness competency. Based on my self
assessment and other material on leadership.
With the economy bordering on a recession, my company is looking for ways
to increase revenues while decreasing costs. I believe one of the easiest ways to
do this is to cut the employee training budget. However, in the long-term viability
recognize that to be successful I must continually develop my people, especially
leaders. Leadership development is not about reading a book or attending a
seminar. Sustained leadership development is a process. It must be tailored to
meet my company's specific needs and goals to be successful. Here is what I put
together to help me implement my level 3 leadership skills in my organization,
while utilize the some of the material from the self assessments and other
material on leadership.
Judgment and Decision Making
* Recognizes & addresses problems.
* Uses resources and previous experience in decision making.
* Problem solving: assesses risks, analyses options, makes & implements good decisions, steps up and takes charge as necessary and accepts responsibility.
* Acts appropriately in crisis or potential crisis situations.
* Knows when to stop people; able to step up and take charge & say something is wrong or unsafe. Able to say no. Able to enforce Venture policies.
Maturity/Responsibility/Integrity
* Well respected by participants & staff.
* Sees tasks through to completion, follows through on commitments
* Have a plan and a contingency plan, able to adjust.
* Aware that trip leaders are representing the program and is good role
model.
* Models socially responsible behavior and promotes same from others.
* Awareness of and ability to manage own emotions.
Safety Conscious
* Knowledge of risk management plan.
* Knowledge of dynamics of accidents model.
* Is active in preventing emergency/survival situations.
Positive member of leadership team
* Gives, receives & applies constructive criticism graciously & compassionately.
* Sets goals for the trip in collaboration with co-leaders.
* Leads or contributes to staff debriefing and completes leadership
evaluations after the trip.
* Works cooperatively with fellow staff.
* Takes initiative for doing fair share of teams work and looks for ways to
contribute.
Teaching Ability
* Effective teaching techniques (able to explain and demonstrate skills).
* Able to discuss and apply knowledge of learning styles and strategies to
engage different styles.
