THE VALENTINE DAY MASSACRE

During the height of prohibition and the never ending competition between gangster rivals Al "Scarface" Capone and George "Bugs" Moran, war was nothing new to the authorities of Chicago. However, investigators on the scene found the Valentine's Day Massacre to be a bit odd. The victims were mobsters, so why would they face the other way for anyone without putting up a fight. It was a question that confused many people. Al Capone was a big mobster and he had arranged for Chicago mobster George "Bugs" Moran to be killed on February 14, 1929. It all took place at a warehouse that was located at 2122 North Clark Street. One of the biggest days to every take place in Chicago. The building was called the S-M-C Cartage Company. That was the day that seven members of Bugs' gang were lined up against the rear inside wall of the garage. They were then shot and killed by five members of Capone's gang (two of them were dressed as police officers). Capone himself had arranged to be on vacation in Florida at the time. It was pretty crazy, as the papers went out the next day they stated that it actually had been police officers who killed the men. About a year after the murders, the police raided the home of Fred Burke, a professional killer who sometimes had been hired by Capone. They came across the guns used in the St. Valentines Day Massacre. Burke was never brought to Illinois to be tried for the massacre though.
