Career Event Attendance Reaction Paper: Google Info Session
September 22, 2015
Two months ago I had the opportunity to attend an event sponsored by University Career Services. I chose to attend the Google Information Session on September 22. The overall session was very enlightening and I am very glad I decided to attend. The employees who spoke were all from Google’s Chapel Hill office off of Franklin Street.
One of the major topics they focused on was Google Maps and how it is always constantly changing. Since maps is frequently being updated there is a huge issue with spam and hacking. In order to gain an upper-hand on competitors, businesses would hack into Google Maps and modify the businesses hours, locations, phone number, and other criteria. Maps has established a spam engineering team for this specific reason.
Another topic I found very interesting was Google’s new “Photos” feature. Since I myself have a Google phone (Nexus 5) I knew some of the information they telling us. I was unaware of the “Kid to Adult” feature in which google can track your face from childhood to adulthood from several pictures and compile all of them into story. There is also a feature in which you can search through photos by typing a name, place, color, or even an event!
Google is also launching a new wireless network called Project Fi. You will be able to call and text using Wi-Fi and if you start a call over Wi-Fi and walk outside, Project Fi detects when your signal becomes weak and seamlessly moves your call over to a cell network to keep the conversation going. Project Fi uses new technology to intelligently connect you to the fastest network whether it's Wi-Fi or one of their partner LTE networks. The Project Fi plan will start with the Fi Basics for $20 per month, which includes: unlimited domestic talk and text, unlimited international texts, ability to use your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot, and coverage in 120+ countries. It's $10 per GB for data. So it would be $10 for 1GB, $20 for 2GB, and $30 for 3GB with no annual contract required.
