Effects of Global Warming
Every where you look you see commercials on ethane powered vehicles or movies educating the public on global warming. Major companies seem to be feeling the effects of global warming. Many car companies are urged to produce "earth friendly" vehicles and also required to reduce emissions of CO2. Many companies are benefiting from this global phenomenon. It seems that when a door closes another one opens. The effects of global warming are becoming very apparent on earth and are leaving lasting effects on the environment.
There have been many conflicting views on global warming. On one side of the spectrum, people believe that the warming of the earth is due to the daily emit of CO2, by vehicles and factories around the earth. However, you have polar opposites that believe this world is just going threw a phase, as CNN weather anchor Orelon Sidney explains, "The Earth is more than 4 billion years old and humans haven't been around that long. So this could just be a part of cycle."(McManus ) We as people might not know the central causes of global warming, but we sure witness the effects of global by changing weather patterns and the issues that these effects might be causing.
Before we begin to explore the effects of this phenomenon it would be smart to see what global warming is and how it might occur. Global warming is said to be the increase of the earth's average temperature in its oceans and atmosphere. This event we are experiencing is believed to be fueled by the greenhouse effect. In short description, the greenhouse effect is where certain gases are trapped in the earth's atmosphere. (Wittlets) The gases then reflect the sun's radiation back to earth, in return causing global warming.
Over the past decade there have been a great changes in certain climates, anywhere from record highs in Oklahoma, to significant flooding in El Paso. Meteorologists say that the simple reason is the air is getting warmer, in which warmer air holds moisture causing droughts throughout the world. Then when the air decides to release the moisture as rain you have very significant downpours. (Blakemore)
Also another apparent effect of global warming is the increasing strength of hurricanes. It is easy, the warmer the water is, the more fuel the hurricane has to become stronger. On Aug 29, 2005, hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast and left a massive clean up for the government. We can't actually blame global warming for Katrina, but we might continue to see aggressive storms of this nature, with the increase of ocean temperatures.
With the effects of global warming producing severe storms and giant tsunamis there also come the after effects. For instance after hurricane Katrina, the nation was left with five hundred thousand homeless individuals that needed a place to reside. Many of the people were transported to shelters across the country where they might stay temporarily until they find a permanent residence. Crime rates in certain places housing the hurricane victims took a surprisingly rise, for example Katrina evacuees are suspects/victims of 59 of 262 homicides in Houston from Jan1. to Aug 26 , 2005. (McManus)
