World War I resulted from nationalism of Britain, Germany, France, Austria-Hungary and Serbia which led to alliances (alliance-ism) between countries in Europe. With alliances being formed inside of Europe this led to the mobilizing of each country or alliances military (militarism). After the Industrial Revolution (industrialism) had come into full effect, Great Britain, Germany and France needed foreign markets to appease the economy; which meant increasing their land mass (imperialism). All these things built high tension up in Europe to the point where one little assassination became the out break of world war.

In the Pre-WWI era each country in Europe rode high on the confidence steed; each saying they were better than the other and rubbing it in their faces. After the Franco-Prussian War Germany and Italy were left divided, until many nationalist movements were made to unify each country; Austria-Hungary and the Balkans were separated by multiple conflicting national groups; and France was left to regroup itself after a loss to Germany. This is when nationalism came into play and helped each country revive its self-esteem and start things moving again.

Since each country was getting so full of itself it made the other countries feel insecure and want a form of insurance to help them out incase something bad broke out. Thus alliances were formed up and down in Europe: France with Bulgaria and Russia, Russia with Serbia, Bulgaria with Britain, Germany with Italy and then with Austria-Hungary, etc. America stayed as far away from any alliance as possible. With so many alliances being built up in Europe it could only mean that each one would need something to back them up if things went from bad to worse.
