Cell phones have been used as a form of communication for all ages, from an eight year old girl, to a sixty year old man. With today's advanced technology, they can be made very small, yet still contain countless new features. It started out with the ability only to call another person, but developed into being able to browse the web, play games, text messages, take pictures, and even record videos. Recently, the use of any electronics, including cell phones, has been prohibited in New York City public schools. Should the use of cell phones be considered illegal in these schools?

Some students extremely depend on their cell phones, and find themselves lost without one. Having the ability to use the phone in all kind of emergencies made them feel safer, especially those living farther away. If something tragic happened to the student, or if they saw a crime, or even a fire, the cell phone can be considered the fastest tool to get help. Other students and even many teachers like the cell phone mostly for its ability to tell time. They can use that ability to plan and better organize their day. Multiple alarms can be set to remind them of their planned tasks. Again, several can argue that watches were made for these reasons, but why get a watch, when one can get a cell phone giving them access to a lot more features.

Cell phones have became very popular because they allow a parent to always contact a student, and a student to always contact the parent. Because of that, the parent feels secure, when their child leaves for school everyday, knowing that no matter what, they can always be contacted. Cells also allow students to better communicate with each other, as with one call, a meeting spot can be easily established.
