On-the-Job Trainee


  1. Introduction

On-the-Job Training (OJT), as a vital part of college curriculum provides opportunity for each student to experience, learn and expose in the real work environment that any student will encounter in actual field of work in near future. It aims to train and orient students about the work and their future chosen field of career. OJT will generally be the primary method used for broadening student’s skills and increasing productivity. It is particularly appropriate for developing proficiency skills unique to an employee’s job.

OJT allows student to interact and communicate with different kind of people that will help to increase self-confidence, learning by working and develop personal growth.

Cesco Offshore Construction Service, Inc. ,despite of the short period of time as a trainee became my colleague in nurturing my skills, discipline, expertise and professionalism being Electrical engineer in the future. This firm also taught an OJT like us on what, how and who will encounter in the real world in terms of application of engineering works.  

  1. Objectives
  1.  To Increase knowledge and skills acquired in school in preparation to future professional work.
  2. To have an overview to the duties and responsibilities of an Electrical Engineering profession.
  3.  To observe safety at all times inside the yard or any working station.

  1. Job Functions
  1. Observe and assists preventive maintenance and repair of the defective instruments and equipment in the plant operation conducted by supervisors, engineers, foremen, and trained employees.
  2. Weekly checking and counting of electrical supplies at the stockroom for inventory.
  3.  Withdraw requested materials and supplies at the warehouse.
  4.  Encode the results of testing of equipment and machines specifically electrical and diesel driven welding machines.
  5. Repairing and/or replacement of any defective component in an instrument specially the quivers used in the yard by the workers
  6.  Assist supervisors and engineers in updating records.
  1. Significance

The exposure to real work environment that the on-the-job training offers is an effective way of enhancing the student’s knowledge and skills acquired in school. On-the-job training gives the opportunity to experience actual employment. It gives ideas to students on how life will be after schooling and entering the field of their chosen industry. It is an effective training ground for students that may serve as their stepping-stone for future career. On-the-job training also helps in the student’s personal development that can valuable in the future.
