Physical Geography
China 's climate is extremely diverse. It ranges from tropical in the south to sub arctic in the north. China is mostly mountainous with high plateaus. The west is mainly made up of desert land and the east in made up of plains, deltas, and hills. China 's coastline is approximately 14,500 kilometers. China has more than 1,500 rivers each draining about 1000 square kilometers or more. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the source of most of the large rivers. China has a famous, man-made river called The Grand Canal. The Grand Canal runs from Beijing in the north to Hangzhouin Zhejiang Province in the south. It links the five major rivers in China . At about 1,801 kilometers in length, it is the longest and oldest man-made waterway in the world. China 's main rivers include: the Yangtze River, Yellow River, Heilong River , Pearl River, Liaohe River , Haihe River , and the Huaihe River . The Yangtze River, also known as the "golden waterway", is the largest river in China . At about 6,300 kilometers long, it is the third largest river in the world. The second largest river in China is the Yellow River . It is about 5,464 kilometers long with lush pasturelands and abundant mineral deposits. The Heilong River is located in north China and extends about 4,350 kilometers. You will find the Pearl River in south China with a length of about 2,211 kilometers. Most of China 's lakes are found on the Middle-Lower Yangtze plain and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

China is one of the world's oldest and most complex civilizations. China has a written history of 4,000 years and has rich cultural relics and historical sites. It is the inventor of the compass, paper-making, gunpowder, and printing.
