College students come from many different backgrounds. Most come directly from high school, some are returning after a period in the working world, some are attempting to climb the corporate ladder, and then there are the "moms" who want to finish school and begin a career. Regardless of their origins, college students come in all shapes and sizes and each type is easy to spot from a mile away anywhere on campus.
The majority of high school students plan to attend college. More and more of the better paying jobs require college degrees. A college education with a degree becomes necessary. I can always tell a college student directly out of high school. Youthful looks with the fad jeans, multiple body piercing, and baseball hats are a dead giveaway. Oh, and do not forget the flip-flops! Walking around campus and observing these individuals can be an education in itself. These students appear to be carefree going through the motions of attending college classes. Homework assignments are usually late if completed at all. These students tend to gather outside of the classroom in the hallway, giggling and talking loudly for all to hear about how they were out the night before until 3am. This is also a classic sign. Oh, to be nineteen again - no thanks!
Next are the students who are now returning to college after taking some time off after high school. These are the students who decided college was not for them and decided to try the working world. However, the common working world is not the way anyone would want to spend a lifetime. Sometimes its just a matter of assessing the fact that living on $5.75 an hour, flipping burgers, and driving a twenty year old rusted out automobile is not a glamorous life. These students typically carry books that if stacked up would equal half their height! Goal oriented, these students now appreciate working around class schedules
