Julien Albertini College Essay

Bang! I hit the bar again. That was 2 of three shots I had at clearing this height. If I clear this I'm going to the NY state meet. Everyone is glaring at me as I crawl off the pits distraught. "Hold your arch, and you've got it. You've got the height to clear it," my coach chanted. After the little pep talk I watched every other competitor miss the height. I grew more and more timid every time the bar was hit. Though I told myself repetitively Ð''I can't give up, I'm better than this.' It was my opportunity again at this height. I wasn't going to give up. I knew I could clear this height even though everyone hit it. I kept my eyes closed as I was soaring over the bar on my last attempt at 6' 2". When I opened my eyes again I heard the crowd cheering. I cleared it. From that day on my life had changed. This taught me that if I put my mind to something and be dogged, I could accomplish anything in life.

Obstacles are set in life for you to overcome them, not to fail. Obstacles may not be overcome, but they're set there for you to learn and to try harder the next time. For example, Ben Franklin didn't automatically discover that he can use electricity to power objects, nor did Newton automatically discover the laws of gravity. Both these men constructed many different experiments to support their theories, though many of their experiments failed. So they stood back up and tried harder to reach their goals. Also for Charles Lindbergh, he became the first pilot to complete a non-stop transatlantic flight, never completed by any human. If these vital men in history didn't quit when all the odds were against them, why should I.
