Summary and Response
In Caroline Bird's essay, "College is a waste of time and money", argues that college education is a useless endeavor that is often forced to students. According to Bird, students lack motivation and enthusiasm for college education. She also claims that college education does not make a student more ready for a job neither there are jobs that are relevant to the field of study. I agree to what bird says in this essay because I know people that come to school for the wrong reasons for example they are either forced by their parents, they want financial aid money, or they are just lost and don’t know what to do with themselves.
This essay strictly discusses why college is basically the new high school diploma and how it is not the best thing to do. Bird states that students do not come to college out of interest in studies but because it has become “the thing to do” and college education is perceived as a way of escaping from accepting job responsibilities and as an obligatory function dues to parental pressures. Only 25% of students enter college to further their knowledge and for the remaining 75% it’s a social center or again vat. Students are sent to college because youngsters serve no other purpose in society. Some students view their time in college as a sentence to be served. Other college students look at their life as better than doing nothing as jobs are not that readily available and also a good way of living away from home along with financial support from their parents. Lastly, Bird gives statistics showing that a high school student just received the cash for their education and investing, is ton more of an investment then just going to college.
I agree to what bird says about why “college is a waste of time and money.” I know many students who come to college to get free money, forced by their parents, or don’t know what to do with their life and simply go to college because they see that everyone else is doing it. My cousin Andres is a great example because he came to college simply because everyone else was doing it, and he only did one semester in the automotive program just to get free money to buy an expensive box of tools. He didn’t receive any degree, but he already had knowledge as a young kid fixing cars at home, and now he has a successful career working for good guys. He gets great pay, vacation time, and full benefits. College is not as important as it used to be, many people are finding great paying jobs with no college experience at all.
