Competitive Sports

Some people think that competitive sports are not good for kids. Others think that they are good. This has been a hotly debated topic. I believe that kids should be able to do them, and that they are good for kids to do. I understand where parents could be concerned about their child, but I have some great reasons why kids should do them. Such as they lower obesity rates, teach kids important life lessons, and will teach them how to live a healthy life style.

Competitive sports lower obesity rates. “If all adolescents plays at least two sports a year, obesity rates would drop 26%, and the prevalence of overweight adolescents would fall by 11%. (Sports Promote Healthy Weight in Teenagers, Anahad O’ Connor, July 17, 2012.) In America 35.7% of adults are overweight. If we can stop kids with bad habits, we can drop that number drastically. I understand that sports can be very expensive for kids to do, especially if they are doing two per year, but you don’t have to be on a team. If you go out and throw a football around, or shoot some hoops with friends, it can help reduce the changes of kids becoming overweight.

Competitive sports also help with important life skills. “Kids will set goals for themselves, and by doing this it will put them in a place for the future. So instead of kids joining a gang, or doing drugs, they will not want to ruin there bright future. (The Benefits of Competitive Athletic Sports Climate, Kirk Mango, October 5, 2012) “Kids are also put into tough situations which requires them to use perseverance, and determination.” Kids will learn from there failures. They will have to learn to cope with the fail. Then they will work harder, and try harder, to make the fail into a success. Kids will also learn good time management; strong senses of focus and concentration learn to deal with pressure.
