Complaint Box: Loquacious People
Do you know the one thing that absolutely drives me crazy? Its people who WONT stop talking. The main reason that this annoys me is because I feel like I need to be nice and pay attention to what they’re saying even though I really don’t care about what they have to say. Being stuck in a situation like that is honestly so horrible. I could give them so many signs as to show them that they’re annoying me but that doesn’t stop them at all; they keep on talking. Normally I just deal with it, but when it really pushes me over the top is when I’m in a bad mood or just really tired.
Two examples of when this happened took place pretty recently in my life. The first time was a couple weeks ago when I was in my school bus on the way back home from school. I was so exhausted because I had only gotten three hours of sleep the previous night and had class all day so I just wanted to sleep. But unfortunately this little annoying seventh grade boy named Bobby, who sat in front of me wouldn’t allow me to do so. Throughout the entire bus ride, he kept talking about his dog and wouldn’t stop trying to show me pictures of him on his iPad. I just nodded occasionally and smiled but whenever I tried to show him how tired I was by closing my eyes and leaning against the window, he apparently didn’t get the message at all because he continued poking my shoulder so that I would listen. At certain times it felt so awkward because I didn’t know what else to say or do. Ultimately I decided not to say anything to him since he seemed so happy and I didn’t want to come across all mean and rude.
The second time it happened was last week in school during my free period. I had finished all my classes for the day and wanted to finish my homework before going home so that I could go to a party at my friend’s house. That didn’t happen though because of one of my classmates. She came up to me and started talking to me about how much she hated one of her classes. I did care about what she had to say but I really wanted to finish my work. I thought our conversation was only going to last for a couple minutes but she ended up talking even after twenty minutes and that’s when I decided to talk to her. Since I knew her pretty well and understood that she wouldn’t take it personally if I asked her to stop, I decided to go ahead and explain my situation. She did understand and apologized before leaving. I really appreciated that and it gave me a little more courage to open up and tell people in the kindest way possible to stop if they are annoying me.
