BUSINESS DESCRIPTION
Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PotashCorp or ‘the company’) is a Canadian company that is engaged in producing fertilizer and feed products such as potash, phosphates, and nitrogen products. The company operates in Canada, the US, and Trinidad and Tobago.
PotashCorp operates through three business segments: potash; phosphate; and nitrogen.
The potash segment is involved in the mining and production of potash, which is used as fertilizer. The segment produces standard potash and granular potash. The company owns and operates five potash mines in Saskatchewan and one in New Brunswick.
The company produces potash using both conventional and solution mining methods. For FY2014, the company’s conventional potash operations mined 26.2 million tons of ore at an average mineral grade of 23.7% potassium oxide (K2O). Also, potash production from all the operations consisted of 8.73 million tons of potash with an average grade of 61.0% K2O. In addition, PotashCorp’s operations in New Brunswick produced 0.9 million tons of sodium chloride (salt) during the year.
PotashCorp's phosphate segment is engaged in the mining of phosphate ore and manufacturing phosphoric acid, solid and liquid fertilizers, animal feed supplements, purified phosphoric acid (which is used in food products and industrial processes), hydrofluosilicic acid (HFSA) and silicon tetrafluoride (STF). PotashCorp operates primarily at two facilities: facility near Aurora, North Carolina and a facility near White Springs in northern Florida. The Aurora facility includes a six million ton per-year mining operation, three sulfuric acid plants, four phosphoric acid plants, four purified acid plants, a liquid fertilizer plant, four superphosphoric acid (SPA) plants, a defluorinated phosphate (DFP) or animal feed plant, two granulation plants capable of producing di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) or mono-ammonium phosphate (MAP) and four STF plants. The White Springs facility includes a mine and the Swift Creek chemical complex, which thereby consists of two sulfuric acid plants, one phosphoric acid plant, and one SPA plant. Also, the company’s Geismar, Louisiana facility manufactures phosphoric acid. It consists of a sulfuric acid plant, a phosphoric acid plant and a liquid fertilizer plant.
Moreover, the other phosphate properties includes: animal feed plants in Marseilles (Illinois), Joplin (Missouri), and Weeping Water (Nebraska); a technical and food grade phosphate plant in Cincinnati, Ohio; and a terminal facility at Morehead City, North Carolina.
In addition, in FY2014, the annual production capacity of the mines has been 9.6 million tons of phosphate rock. During the year, the Aurora facility’s total production of phosphate rock was 4.4 million tons and the White Springs facility’s total production of phosphate rock was two million tons. Also, the company produces sulfuric acid at the Aurora, White Springs and Geismar facilities. In addition, the company’s ammonia operations include the purchase, sale and terminalling of anhydrous ammonia and much of this ammonia is purchased from third parties. Ammonia for Aurora is supplied by rail and truck from the company’s production facilities in Lima, Ohio; Geismar, Louisiana; and
