Corn by Ben Logan
A new ending…
Task 1
…took the hand!
I didn’t understand why father just gave the stranger some of our corn. Why would he do that? I asked my father on the way back to the fence we were repairing and he said that sometimes you got to be the better man and help people and the man out there needed corn. I said to my father that that is not a valid point, the stranger who turned out to be our new neighbor just could have asked for corn. Father said that some people have so much pride that they already have made a “conversation” with the person inside their mind and have found the solution that they would get a no, so they thinks it’s easier to just take it.
Father said that the man would return with the corn because he could see that it was a good man. I still had my doubt but let it be for a while. At the next harvest the man returned with ten full loaded corn packs. My father said he only wanted the six of them, but our neighbor wouldn’t take the four packs with him home, and told my father that he had seen the good in him and had let him borrow some corn well knowing that there was a chance that the neighbor would never return with the corn. So he came up with a solution. Father would take the six packs corn for himself and the last four would he place in the barn. So if the neighbor ever needed more corn, there were four packs ready for him.
All he ever had to do was to….. ask.
