In this course, I have learned a lot about my work and how to contrast work. Through all my pieces I have done, I found a common theme in my writing is dark and mysterious. I like to focus on what makes the work mysterious and go from there. How I construct my work is different for both poetry and prose. When starting off this semester with poetry, I found myself choosing a topic, an image or memory. From there I would write down words in relevance to the topic, image or memory. I would then start to piece my work together to create a story through poetry. For two out of the three of my personal best pieces, they fall under the the category of poetry. My piece Glaring Eyes and my other work Frowning Model, create these images that provide a deeper story then the surface. When constructing and forming my prose, I pick a theme and then create a story through there. I type all my thoughts on to a page without thought, to let my mind build a story. From there I go back, adding names of people and places. My best work of prose I have created this semester was in fact The Man. I took a suspenseful theme and turned into an adventurous story.
To first talk about Glaring Eyes, I started writing this through a class assignment of a pantoum. The repletion of the pantoum creates a mysterious chilling atmosphere for the reader. When I first wrote this piece, the title “Stalker” gave away my mystery of the man who was watching the girl in red boots. Through seven revisions and a workshop on the piece in class, the title glaring eyes came about. The watching eyes of a mysterious stalker man made the poem that much more suspenseful. I believe I accomplished my theme of creepy and suspense. I believe in this piece I created great images to help readers follow the story as if they were in the van watching this person.
The other favorite work of my own is a poem Frowning Model. This piece was formed in an in class assignment of a postcard. I believe I accomplished a story for an image rather then trying to create an image through a story. The image of this art made from wood and clothe created a woman sitting. The frown on her face stood out to me. With bone like features, I immediately thought of models and women fashion in current day. The stress to be skinny and beautiful hurts a lot of women today. Looking at this postcard, I thought up words and phrases. From there I believe I accomplished a moving poem about a model, starving but can’t eat because of the fear of not being beautiful. The frown is her true sadness, but “we” society view it as a fashion pose. I believe I accomplished a message in this work and that is what makes it one of my favorites.
