Cystic Fibrosis
Definition:
A defective gene which causes the body to produce a thick abnormally sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to lung infections that are life threatening. The thick mucus also can obstruct the pancreas, preventing digestive enzymes from going to the intestines to help break down and absorb food.
Who Has It?
About 30,000 children and adults in the United States
10 million people in the U.S. are symptomless carriers unknowing
1 out of 2,500 to 3,000 Caucasion babies born have CF.
1 out 17,000 African American babies have CF
1 out 90,000 Asian Americans have CF
80% are diagnosed by age 3, and 10% are diagnosed after age 18
40% of the CF population are 18 years or older
Symptoms
Very Salty Tasting Skin
Blockage in the bowel
Greasy smelly bulky stools
Consistent Coughing, with phlegm
Shortness of breath, and wheezing
Big appetite, but never gain weight
Delayed Growth
Frequent sinus or chest infections
Risk Factors
The biggest risk factor is family history of the disease
-If you and your partner have families with CF, chances are good your children will have CF, it is very genetic.
