Dating is meant to be fun. it's a chance to get to know new people and discover
possibilities with them. Sadly, some people take advantage of the situation. Most women
extend their trust to their dates, and some men use this as an opportunity to their carnal
desires on the helpless victim. Date rape is a growing phenomenon that increases by th
e numbers each year. Statistics show that women who are between ages of 16 and 25 are
4 times more prone to date rape (James Haley. "Introduction." At Issue: Date Rape).
In 1991, the view that a woman could be "date raped" was a new and
thinking about rape. Most people had considered rape to be a violent crime
committed by a stranger in a dark alley, not an instance of unwanted sex with an
acquaintance. Beginning in the late 1980s, however, feminist activists on college campuses
promoted a broader definition of rape that included situations in which women were
pressured into having sex against their will or violated while intoxicated. They based their
results of a survey of college women conducted by University of Arizona Medical School
professor Mary Koss.
It is happenning very often nowadays. Every night you see the news and it never fails. There is always a report concerning someone being raped by either a force or by using those "date rape drugs" . It is sick. Women need to be more cautious with who and where they choose to go out with. Women need to get a "take-on" attitude and deal with obnoxious comments made by desperate individuals every day. Dealing with that is already a drag. Now they also have to maybe even carry pepper spray to push those sick people away! The first step to deal with this arrogant situation is to stand up.
