Neil Perry

In the movie The Dead Poet Society there is a young man by the name of Neil Perry. The story takes place in England in 1959 at an all boys academy called Welton. Neil is a tall, skinny, dark haired young man. He talks a lot, he is outgoing, and nice! Neil is very well behaved around his family especially his father. He works very hard to get good grades and do good in school to please his father. His father is very controlling, manipulating, and overpowering. Mr. Perry wants Neil, his son, to go to medical school and become a doctor. Neil on the other hand has different dreams for himself but is too scared to tell his father to stop controlling his life. Theater is Neil's dream, that is all he wants in life!

Neil tried out for the school playƐ'...and he made the lead role. When his father found out, he made Neil quit the play and promise to never do something like that behind his back again. As always, of course Neil followed his fathers commands. Even though Neil has a controlling father he still likes to try and make people happy. He is an upbeat young man that loves music, enjoys reading poetry, and likes to be active, like most boys do! He thinks he is the coolest guy on campus, and he thinks he is also invincible and good looking too. Neil has not ever been in a play or musical but feels he was born to act. His friends and other buys at school say that he can sometimes be nosey and annoying, but other then that they think he is a pretty cool guy!

When the school year starts Neil finds out that there is a new teacher in the school and his name is Mr. Keating. Neil has Mr. Keating for a class, he says that he has never had a teacher quite like Mr. Keating. Mr. Keating teaches the buys about life through poetry. One of the poems that he tells the boys they should follow in life is "Carpe Diem" which means to seize the day. The other saying, that he tells them they should follow is "suck all the marrow out of life" which basically means to live life to the fullest. Mr. Keating tells the boys to have as much fun as possible. Poems are a way to express yourself, Mr. Keating says to use poems to show your emotion and feelings.

Neil decides to stick with drama and take the way of life that Mr. Keating taught him to and start a club. A lot of the boys in Mr. Keating's class decide that that is a great idea and decide to join Neil to start a club called the Dead Poet Society. The Dead Poet Society is a club in which boys can express themselves in the way their teacher, Mr. Keating taught them to. Club meetings are in a dark and private cave right outside of campus. Neil is trying to gain independence from his overpowering father. The club lets Neil feel more independent. Neil Perry and Todd Anderson are like the leaders of the Dead Poet Society. Todd is not as much as a leader as Neil is but he is working on it.
