Dealing with Visuals: Pictures Obama Hug[pic 1]
The colored picture shows US-president Barack Obama and the Republican governor of New Jersey Chris Christie on an airfield in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and shortly before the presidential election in 2012. In the background, you can see a helicopter, probably from the president. Both are wearing casual clothes and are facing each other shaking hands. Additionally, Obama lays his hand on Christie's shoulder, maybe a sign of support and understanding, as the look of sorrow and sympathy could indicate. Christie in the other side looks sorrowful back and actually just is shaking Obama's hand, his other hand can not be seen. It is not a “real” hug as any other person would do it, embrace each other, instead Obama just is laying a hand on Christie’s shoulder. The picture was taken after Obama has offered help for the victims of Hurricane Sandy and Christie accepted it for the sake of the people. Chris Christie has gotten many critics from his party because of this picture saying he went against Mitt Romney, the Republican candidate, and helped Obama win this election. Ever since Christie denied the hug and said he just wanted the good for his people. With this gesture, Obama could have intended to show that the welfare of the people comes first and only after that the election, as he cooperated and worked as Democrat with the Republican Christie to help them. Through this, he got more votes and won in the end.
