Courageous Soul

Courage is an act similar to bravery. It lurks inside of each of us, and then springs out in times of dire need. It occurs instinctively at opportune times. Acting without personal gain, courage occurs for the well being of a greater good. Death Be Not Proud by John Gunther exemplifies the courageous actions of Gunther's son, Johnny, throughout his memoir.

Johnny's courage springs out in a time of dire need. He reveals his courage, while still maintaining his love of life. This is even after contracting a fatal brain tumor at the mere age of 16. John Gunther illustrates his son's courageousness in his description of Johnny's summer on page 50:

Johnny was not bedridden. He never was that summer. There was not a single day in which he did not spend an hour or so in his workshop. He demanded the he be allowed to do his work in his own special way. Thank goodness he was well enough for that. He loved every minute of that summer.

Johnny maintains his love of life throughout the ever present battle with his brain tumor. When a brain tumor enhances Johnny's positive approach towards living, he becomes an example of courage.

Furthermore Johnny's courageous actions occur instinctively. He remains kind and courteous with the nurses, while still experiencing pain himself. These courageous actions happen at opportune times. For instance, after Johnny goes through another X-ray treatment he asks his father, " 'Well how many whole chapters did you write yesterday?' Then: 'You'd better hurry!'" (Gunther 51). Johnny is able to speak to his father without thinking of his own anguish. Gunther further emphasizes Johnny's courageous behavior when he writes of how Johnny would encourage Frances by stating, "Remember your destiny, Mother!" (Gunther 51). Johnny's courageous actions occur instinctively, because his courageous actions happen in sync with his brain.
