In Death of a Salesman, by ARTHUR MILLER, the struggle between reality and imagination for the central character, Willy lomans, has made him incapable of recognizing who he really is and judging  people  logically , which indicate that Willy Loman has paradoxical personality, in which he see himself as a well-liked, successful salesman but in fact he has to suffer from financial problems and the truth he is not being noticed. In speaking of Willy's complex character, he always makes up a story about a decent financial condition of himself that is opposite to his real condition of life. First, Willy confidently says that " 'I never have to wait in line to see a buyer...That is all they have to know, and I go right thought'" then he hopes to pick up business to pay  the bill, otherwise, he ”’ don't know what to do'" .()In which, paradoxical characters is expressed fully that he is not as successful as how he describes himself because he can now even afford the maintenance costs of machines. Meanwhile,Willy contradicts him by saying that he is both well-liked and ignored. Willy says he is the one"' very well-liked in Hartford‘“, but he is also the one "'not noticed'" when people just pass by him.(36). Two different situations are shown above, sadly, truth seems always to be represented by the action of people keeping eyes off Willy, suggesting that his complex personality is gradually leading him out of the correct recognition of himself. Finally, Willy considers his son , Biff, lazy and non-lazy at all as he says "' The trouble is he is lazy, Goddamnit'", and states "' There is one thing about Biff-- he is not lazy'"() right after the first talk, there is no doubt that Willy is believed to be  influenced by paradoxical characters with  making confusing judgement on Biff unconsciously. With three pieces of evidence,Willy is determined to have paradoxical characters .due to the facts of deceiving himself about success, fabricating a personality he does not own, and non-logic changing opinion about Biff. All of this have bestowed on a man affecting his life. Alas, what a dilemma.
