"What is your experience with decision making models?"
Decision-making is the study of identifying and choosing alternatives based on the values and preferences of the decision maker. The process begins when a team involved knows that some solution is required of them but do not know how or what to do. Decisions vary depending on where you are in your profession life. Early in life, decisions made impact smaller numbers of people or limited resources and are near term issues or problems. The decisions taken follow a set of established steps or procedures. People find themselves participating in more complicated decisions that affect long-term aspects of the organization. Some decisions can be resolved with the experience but some are unfamiliar. I have been involved in several decision-making models depending on the complexity of the problem. One of the decision-making model used is the Rationale Decision-Making (RDM) model at work. (1)
This approach to Basic Decision-Making (1), which is shown in Figure 1.0, begins with developing an understanding of the situation or framing the problem. In this phase identifying the objectives and the context for the decision is considered. Step 2 consists of developing a range of alternatives. Critical thinking and creativity is applied in this stage. This is not done in vacuum but in a group with diverse Myers Briggs indicator types if possible. In Step 3, alternatives are evaluated and chosen ensuring if the objectives are met. The decision has to be an added value. Step 4 consists of commitment and assigning the resources for implementation. This step needs to address the what, how, who, when, where and why? Step 5 consists of Stabilizing and learning from the decision.
In this stage it is confirmed if the implementation is accepted and institutionalized and it also incorporates the elements of determining outcomes and identifying any missed opportunities.
