The purpose of this paper is to define decision-making tools and techniques. This paper will define a decision-making tool, brainstorming, and explain its application as well as when and when not to use this tool. Throughout the paper I will define, apply and explain when and when not to use brainstorming as your decision making tool. The first part is defining brainstorming. Defining brainstorming allows me to both explain and simplify the phrase into a new definition that is easier to understand by all. Then it leads into the application and example of application of brainstorming. Brainstorming is utilized in many aspects of an organization; my example is from personal experience

Brainstorming is an organized approach for producing ideas by letting the mind think without interruption. Brainstorming is also a lateral thinking process. It asks that people come up with ideas and thoughts that seem at first to be a bit shocking or crazy. You can then change and improve them into ideas that are useful, and often stunningly original. Brainstorming is a great way of generating radical ideas. During the brainstorming process there is no criticism of ideas, as free rein is given to people's creativity (criticism and judgment cramp creativity.) This often makes group-brainstorming session's enjoyable experiences, which are great for bringing team members together.

When faced with a difficult situation there are several decision-making tools or techniques that one can employ, brainstorming is one of them. Brainstorming is a powerful technique that breaks through narrow thinking by tapping into ones creativity, calling on every viable, however random, solution imaginable. This helps generate radical ideas and can lead to remarkable results. In order to find the best solution it is important to consider many possible solutions.

Brainstorming involves quickly recording a broad list of ideas, which we can both expand and evaluate. During a brainstorming session ideas should be generated as quickly as possible in order to develop the most creative and varied list of alternatives. As most problems are not easily solved by the first idea

The goal of the brainstorming process is to generate many options related to a specific purpose. Subsequent processing will allow the group to prioritize and/or group ideas. The focus of the brainstorming process is generating ideas Brainstorming is a free form of creativity and flow of ideas, a by association form of thinking that can be very productive for getting to the solution of a problem. Whether that is by individual brainstorming or doing so in groups or with materials, it is an effective and exciting means of bringing out an individual's creative flow.

To brainstorm as a group (the usual definition and method) can be a great way to come up with new ideas. Just be sure to follow the basics (free-flow of ideas, no insulting or judgment, etc.) To get the most out of the group, however, introduce them to some of the best brainstorming tools: basic problem solving techniques. When brainstorming, group members are encouraged to generate as many ideas about a particular topic as they can. For instance, group members may use brainstorming to generate as many solutions as they can in step four of the standard agenda.
