A democracy is a government for the people, by the people. In a democracy everyone has their own opinions, which are voiced and have a large impact on democratic society. The expression of opinion is important to promoting democratic values. The opinions of entertainers, politicians and especially those of ordinary citizens are significant to the fostering of democratic values.
Entertainers can broaden the public's views on a certain topic, and perhaps change them. A person is more likely to listen to their favorite celebrity's political view than just an ordinary person, because they idolize them. When they make statements on a subject, people listen and allow themselves to be open to ideas they have never thought of and take them into consideration themselves. An entertainer in today's society plays a major roll in peoples' opinions across the country and ideas become more diverse.
A politician is only successful if a majority agrees with them. The politician represents thoughts and opinions of a group of people who usually agree with them on a variety of subjects. Politicians can help change opinions of others easily by criticizing another politician who is running for the same position as they are. For example, near voting time, a politician may have public television commercials saying things such as "He voted against raising the minimum wage, while I support the idea." Statements like this are intended to convince citizens making minimum wage, to vote for the politician in the commercial. Propaganda goes both ways however, and in the end citizens ultimately pick the candidate they truly believe with do the job best and represent their thoughts and feelings. In this way, politicians are important to the promotion of democratic values.
