INTRODUCTION

In the Descartes’ Discourse on the Method (Part IV), the author embarks himself on a journey in search of the truth. In addition, as he tries to describe his meditation and the process of his reasoning, he comes up with an unexpected conclusion. Descartes goes on and delves deeply in the consciousness and through philosophy and reasoning he supports the surprised conclusion of his thinking.

In Part IV of the Discourse on the Method, Descartes described his uncommon meditation and demonstrated the method he chose to search for the truth. He goes through the process of forgetting everything he knew. He pretended that everything that had ever entered his mind was not true and was nothing. Has he delved in this project, he realized that he was thinking, and for this reason he recognized he was something. At the realization of this existence, he stated, “And observing that this truth I am thinking, therefore I exist” (Bennett, 2014, p. 15). As he finds out of his reality, he continued to look for the source of this idea. Descartes came to the surprising conclusion that his being could only come from something of absolute perfection, and that was God.

The other surprising statement in his discourse, was when he questioned people that find difficulty in knowing God. And stated, “It’s because they never raise their minds above things that can be perceived by the senses: they are so used to thinking of things only in the way that is especially suited to material things, namely by imagining or picturing them, that they regard as unintelligible or unthinkable anything that they can’t imagine.” (Bennett, 2014, p. 17). Descartes then goes on and question how they believe on what comes to them in dreams more than the existence of God, even when they cannot see the ideas.
