Desertion of the army is selfish in my opinion. It is cowardly and deserves no sympathy. Once you have enlisted in the military I believe that you have the responsibility to serve your country until it is no longer necessary.
When you sign up for the military you understand the risks that you have to take while you are enlisted. You have chosen the responsibility and it is your duty to fulfill it. To bail on all that you have promised to do is downright irresponsible. You can't expect all of your problems to go away by running from them.
There is no reason why you should abandon all of your responsibility as a soldier. You are no longer respected by those who once considered you brave and the other people that recognized you in the military now look down to you. Desertion during war is just a display of your cowardly nature. You have nothing to be proud of by doing that and you would probably regret it later anyway.
If you want to join the military you have to understand the personal responsibility that comes along with it. If you are cowardly enough to give up on everything they our nation is depending on you for then you don't deserve to be a part of our military.
There are so many words that can describe one who will commit desertion during war, selfish is just one of those words. During war you are fighting for millions of people, by sparing your life and abandoning your responsibilities, you could be risking a lot more.
