Different Categories of Dressings
Dressing Mechanism of Action Comments
Stage 1
Transparent Film Dressing
(Tegaderm, Bioclusive) o Protects from friction injury
o Maintains moisture in wound
o Barrier against moisture and bacteria
o Adhesive, semi-oermeable polyurethane membrane
o Promotes formation of new granulation tissue
o Allows visualization of area
o May be left in place up to 7 days if occlusive seal remains
o Be careful when removing because skin can be torn
Thin Hydrocolloid Dressing
(X-thin DuoDerm, Restore X-Thin) o Provides protection of reddened area by decreasing surface injury o Flexible, occlusive dressing that can remain in place up to 5 days
o Translucent, allowing visualization of area
o Maintains moisture w/in wound
o Can be used over all chronic ulcers
Stage 2
Hydrocolloid Dressing (DuoDerm, Comfeel) o Interacts w/the wound fluid to provide a moist environment o Can stay in place until the seal is broken, allowing for enhanced healing
Composite Dressing (Viasorb, Alldress) o Traps wound moisture and provides surface protection o Provides absorbent, non-adherent layer over wound w/occlusive cover
Hydrogel Dressing (Curafil, Woun'Dres) o Provides moisture to a clean granular wound, supporting re-epithelialization o Requires secondary dressing
Foam Dressing Ð'- non-adhesive (3M Foam, Sof-Foam) o Absorbs exudates and debris while maintaining moist environment o Provides non-linting, insulating layer over wound
o May/may not have film coating
o Absorbent and non-adherent to wound base
o May be used w/topical agents
o Don't use if wound is dry unless the goal is to suppress hypergranulation
Stage 3
Polyurethane Foam Adhesive (Allevyn, Curafoam) o Maintains moist wound environment o Absorbs exudates
o For max. absorption, needs direct contact w/wound w/o additional taping
o Adhesive, or safe-tac maintains placing of dressing
o Adhesive dressings may be difficult to remove w/o damaging skin
