Edgar Allan Poe was American writer, editor, and literary critic. Poe is mainly known for his poetry and short stories. He was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. Sadly, Mr. Poe died in the hospital on October 7, 1849. The cause of his death is unknown because, apparently nobody knows what happened during his last few days before he died, but there are many myths, urban legends and theories because of that.

Edgar had a very difficult childhood. His family was very very poor. His parents were both professional actors. The got separated when he was only one year old. They both soon died before Edgar was 3 years old. They both died from the same disease, tuberculosis. He was raised by John and Frances Allan in Richmond, Virginia.

When Edgar was eleven years old, he returned to the United States to continue his schooling. At fourteen he attended the academy of William Burke and succeeded in athletics. By the time he was seventeen, Edgar Poe started attending the University of Virginia. Although, he soon dropped out because John Allan wouldn’t give him money. After that, Poe wasn’t able to support himself so he joined the United States Army. When he was twenty, he applied for West Point but, after about a year he got kicked out. He soon submitted many stories to magazines but were all rejected. In 1835, Edgar won a contest called the "The Manuscript Found in a Bottle" which caused him to finally get a job. He continued to write many more stories and poetry and became the famously known poet he is today.
