The topic of my speech is education at school. I am going to outline the main points of my speech.
Firstly, I am going to describe education in Lithuania.
Secondly, I will talk about Erasmus project.
Finally, I will tell about one of the most important problem in school – bullying.
Nowadays good education is very important if you want to achieve your goals, to have a good job and be successful in the modern competitive society.
First of all, in Lithuania the current system of education is comprised of primary, basic and secondary schools. There are also special education for children with special needs and youth schools which provide basic education. Secondary education ends in taking one compulsory and at least one optional examination. Education is free in all state secondary schools. An important aspect of high education is that scholars can have a scholarships if their grades of exams is very high. In the end students is celebrating Degree ceremony, where successful students are awarded a School leaving Certificate.
Secondly, In Lithuania is very popular E.R.A.S.M.U.S. project. E.R.A.S.M.U.S. is one of the most successful programmes ever put in place by the European Community. Many teenagers can‘t wait for the opportunity to do an internship in foreign countries. The time spent away from home recognised and validated by their own university. More specificially for many young students, it can be especialy helpful when you want to get a better job. In fact, studies show that time spent abroad not only enriches students language skills and academic career but also their intercultural skills, their self-confidence and self-reliance.
Moreover, education has one big disadvantage – bullying and it‘s constantly growing in schools. It can be classified into four types: first(physical) hitting; second (verbal) name-calling; third (relational) destroying friendships; fourth (cyber-bullying) using electronic means to harm others. The most popular type of bulling in schools is verbal. There are few reasons why children might be bulling someone: the vast majority think it‘s fun or that it makes them popular. Kids who are bulling others feel more powerful and the most important that they are copying what they have seen others do before. How to stop bullying? Stand up for other people, teach young people to have an internal locus of control and teach them to recognise and correct their own irrational thinking.
