What do mangers do?
All mangers do the same thing essentially. They have been construed into 10 different roles by the author.
4 myths
1. Managers are reflectic, systematic planner.
False they are action orientated rather than thinking. Unrelenting pace that managers work at; no time to reflect. Real-time responder, conditioned by his job to engage live rather than delayed action.
2. No regular duties to perform.
False they have often been asked to fill in for specialist staff, or meet important customers.
3. The top manager needs aggregated information, which an MIS system best provides.
False. Lately MIS systems are not used. Managers these days prefer direct communication, such as telephone calls, meetings. They also need to be their own 'director of central intelligence.'
4. Management is becoming a science and a profession.
False. The manager's brain programs, time management, information processing and so on, rather than it being layed out.
Interpersonal Roles
1. Figurehead Role -ceremonial nature, touring, important to smooth functioning and cannot be ignored.
2. Leader Role - responsible for all his departments work, motivation and encouragement.
3. Liaison Role - manager makes contacts with those outside his vertical chain of command. (superiors.)
