Today, Education is very different than in Mr. Emerson’s time. Parents are the main

difference. The parents of today do not really spend time with their kids. All they [the

parents] do is tell the child to do their homework and to not come out until the homework

is done. Well the child spends all night doing homework and by the time he comes out, it

is already time for bed. The main point is that the parents never get the time to talk to

their child and inspire them to do well in school.

Students have changed very much since Emerson’s time. The big change is

mainly because of technology. Technology is a huge part of kids’ lives this day in age.

From the television to video games. Video games are the #1 thing for kids right now. The

child now prefers to play the video game console rather than do their homework. This

[the video game console] is also making the children sleepy at school. The kids play the console

for hours and hours, sometimes they play them straight through midnight. The other big

thing in technology is the computer. The computer is the main portal to the internet. The

internet is a portal to the world. While on the internet, kids are on a social networking site

called “Myspace”. Myspace attracts young kids and adults. On this site, kids stay up until

two or three in the morning talking to their friends.

According to Mr. Emerson, parents should be not too much his

parent (Emerson 3). They [the parents] should be more of a friend to their kids instead of

a parent. A parent is usually somebody that only watches their son in everything they do.

They [the parents] chastise their child with blunder when they do something wrong,

instead of talking to them and coaching them [their children] to do the right thing.

Today’s parents work long hours and hardly spend time with them [their children] during

the workweek. The long hours at work, is what affects the children most when it comes to

their education. The child rarely has education reinforcement from his parents. If parents

were to be more involved in their child’s education, we would see high school drop out

rates decrease.

Mr. Emerson’s ideas can help reform education. It is the parents and

teachers’ responsibility to make sure this happens. The teacher has to show more

dedication
