The story is about Kit Tyler going to colonial Connecticut on the ship called the Dolphin. During the voyage Kit meets Nat Eaton. He jumped out of the boat to save her thinking she couldn't swim but she could which was awfully strange especially to Good Wife Cruff. This is not good for kit because they believe that if you can swim you're a witch. She also meets John Holbrook. He was the only one who didn't think that it was strange that she could swim.
Kit reaches Wethersfield after 9 days from Saybrook. Kit is disappointed to what the town locks like she's going to her Aunt Rachel's house but they don't know she's coming. They live in a story house. When she arrives there her uncle Mathew isn't happy that she's staying to live with them. Judith and Mercy also come out to greet her. Kit brought 7 suitcases, including dresses (very rare there). They go to church and everyone stared at Kit because of her clothes. After the meeting she meets William Ashby and senses he likes her.
Kit learns how to card wool, cook cornbread, and make soap and do farm work. In Barbados she had slaves to do everything for her. She told Mercy that the reason had leave Barbados is that a 50 year old man wanted to marry her and she had no other family living there. Her grandfather had died a couple months earlier. William Ashby called on Kit and planes to marry her. He's having a house built for her and everything. Judith is jealous because she likes William but then changes her mind and like John Holbrook. Mercy asks Kit if she wants to teach the Dame School with her since she can read. Kit decides to act out a story from the bible instead of reading it to the students. Things get out of control and right that moment Mr. Eleazer Kimberly the schoolmaster and Reverend John Woodridge walked in and were unhappy with what they saw. They fired Kit because they don't allow play acting and she said it was her idea. Kit feels awful and runs crying to the meadow where the witch Hannah Tupper lives. As Kit is crying Hannah comes out and meets Kit. Kit finds out that Hannah isn't a witch but very lonely.
Kit goes and talks to the schoolmaster and gets her job back. One day she starts teaching Prudence the daughter of Good Wife Cruff to read. She has to teach her in secret by Hannah's house. Kit asks Prudence is she wants to go and meet Hannah. Prudence refuses at first but then Kit convinces her. Prudence ended liking Hannah especially her cats. Prudence no longer thought Hannah was a witch. Rachel finds out that Kit is seeing Hannah and asks her to stop. Rachel says she doesn't think that Hannah's a witch but nobody likes her because she's a Quaker. They think Quakers are responsible for all the bad th8ings that happen. Kit learns that Nat also is friend's with Hannah and brings her gifts from the Island.
One day a sickness comes to the town and affects tall the children. The town's people think that Hannah has out a curse on them. They come to kits house to recruit her uncle in helping them burn her house. Her uncle refuse to go he doesn't believe in such nonsense. Kit decides she has to go warn Hannah. Kit sneaks out the back door Kit gets Hannah until down and they go hide in some tress across the lake. The people burned down her house and come close to finding them. Kit waits with Hannah until dawn to think about what to do just then she sees the Dolphin pass by she gets Hannah on it and tells Nat everything that happened.
When kit gets back to the house Good wife Cruff and other people are there. They're accusing Kit of being witch and helping put the curse on the children. They take her to a trial and ask her if she was friends with Hannah, kit says yes. They ask her about a book they found with Prudence's name written in it. Kit says she wrote the first one but says nothing else so she doesn't get prudence in trouble. Just then Prudence comes in with Nat. They call her up to ask her if she new Hannah. Prudence answers yes. They ask her about the book and she says she wrote her name that many times. They ask her to write it again and she does with no errors. Her mom says she's bewitched she says her daughter is to dumb to spell. Prudence also says she can read they ask her to read the bible, not very many young girls can read the bible. Prudence read it with ease and everyone's shocked. Her mom says she's bewitched and that Kit' is a witch. Her husband stands up to her and says he' proud of his daughter and says he wants to drop the charges. He's glad that she can read and he was sick of his wife always telling her she was useless.
Kit tells William Ashby that she doesn't think there meant to be. William agrees and they stop seeing each other. John Holbrook gets back from the fighting with the Indians and asks Mercy to marry him. William asks Judith to marry him and they have a double wedding. Kit finally realizes
