I have not really heard of Greenpeace before so having to hear that they were going to give us a tour in their ship as well as tell us stories about the impact of the climate crisis on our rights as human beings, I was really curious. Going into Aguz Resto Bar, they made us choose which story we want to hear and I immediately chose the Daughter of The Storm because I had a feeling it was about typhoon Haiyan. I chose that story because I feel like if she conveys her story to me, I could relate to what she is feeling since I have also experienced the aforementioned typhoon. And I was right.
She told us about her story and it nearly made me cry. She told us she lost her family during the typhoon and how she saw how they drowned before her eyes. I also lost a family recently, althought not because of typhoon haiyan, but I know how it feels to suddenly lose someone you love. It was painful for me, for our family, and we did not know what we would do after. I did not see how my father died but I know how he was taken away. In her case, she saw it with her own eyes. She even thought of just making herself drown just like what happened to her loved ones, but she was afraid of letting go. It may sound selfish to choose to live in that moment but we are all afraid of dying. What was more painful is the thought that you survived. You feel the pain of the loss after, you grieve for the lives taken brutally. You may feel like no one really understood but in the case of the devastation brought by the typhoon, a lot of the people lost their loved ones. A lot of people understand. I admired her for still holding on after what had happened to her family. She never lost her faith and she had made her situation the drive to inspire people.
It saddens me how all these lives were taken away in a single sweep. We all know that the typhoon was caused by our own doings. But sometimes we don't really realize this unless something happens that teaches us a lesson. We humans lack the discipline, we lack care, some us don't even care. Is it because we don't experience immediately the strong impact of what we are doing to our planet? But the truth is we do experience it. When it rains, a lot places are suffering from floods. Early in the morning when we go to school or office, we experience the immense heat, the pollution. Everyday, there are animals being extinct......... We may not experience this all but it is happening somewhere in this world. In this planet were we all live in. We may not be the big polluters but nature's revenge affects us all, polluters or not.
